Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to run electric forklifts is provided by big industrial batteries which need to be charged regularly and maintained correctly. Safety measures must be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is very important to check fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
It is essential for employees working with a lift truck battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG comprise safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect clothes and skin from other residue or leaked acid is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash station should be located close to the charging place. The path to the post must not be blocked and an injured employee must be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging area in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It should be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are not allowed near a charging area and battery. Do not permit objects like lighters or matches to be used when someone is checking the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging place also has to be properly ventilated. The recharging process could release gas. These fumes are both poisonous and explosive.
