How to Utilize a Forklift
Forklifts are material handling equipment that could move cargo. Normally, these equipment are utilized in certain industries to transport heavy materials in a wide variety of settings such as airports, supply companies and warehouses. Anybody operating a forklift needs to be trained to carefully use the machine. It is vital to be fully aware of one's environment while operating a forklift. Lift trucks are designed to run on gasoline, propane, diesel or batteries. Typical lift trucks are common in various commercial applications and are not hard to operate with correct training. The following steps outline the basics of utilizing a forklift:
1 Get familiar with all the levers which are utilized to move and maneuver the cargo from location to another location. The levers can be found to the right of the steering wheel.
2 The first lever controls the up and down movement of the tines. Pushing the lever away from you moves them down and pulling the lever towards you moves the forks up. Tines should always be kept close to the ground except when loading or unloading.
3 The other two levers control the tilt as well as the left/right movement of the forks. The tines are designed to tilt between 15 and 30 degrees. It is better that you practice prior to picking up a load. Using the second lever, pull it towards you to tilt the blades back, and push it away from your body to tilt the forks forward.
4 Lever number 4 is used to control the side to side movement of the forks from left to right. Just move the lever in the direction of where you would like the blades to move: right to move the tines right and left in order to move the blades left.
5 Always approach a load cautiously. Lower the forks and carefully drive forward until the blades slide under the cargo. Afterward lift the tines several centimeters by pulling the lever towards your body. If the cargo is top-heavy, you need to tilt the tines backwards a little for balance.
6 Alert other people and personnel when the lift truck is approaching by honking and take safety measures by taking corners slowly and honking. Approach the area where you would be working with caution. Manipulate the levers to maneuver the cargo to where it is going. When the load is placed, reverse gears and back away carefully.
7 Lift trucks stop in much the same way as other vehicles. The brake is found to the accelerator's left side. When stopped, put the gear into "park."
